SMU Fondren Library
How might we optimize the in-person student experience in Fondren Library?

This project focuses on optimizing the student experience at SMU’s Fondren Library using a human-centered design approach. Through research activities like student tabling, the team identified that the library functions as a "third place," fostering community, belonging, and social interaction outside of academic work. The project uncovered that the first floor is a key hub for underclassmen, where students thrive in spaces that allow individual work in group settings. Based on these insights, the team proposed design changes, such as enhancing communal seating, improving space layouts, and providing more outlets and whiteboards. These recommendations aim to create a more dynamic, collaborative environment that supports student success and strengthens the sense of community in the library.
